Contest Period
- Season runs October 1 – September 30
- Monthly rankings: April through October only
- Cumulative standings use each pilot's top 5 flights
Eligible Flights
- Must depart from Chicago Glider Club, Windy City Soaring, or Sky Soaring
- IGC file must be uploaded to WeGlide no later than 12:00 PM local, 2 days after landing
- All pilots must have an active WeGlide account
- DAeC glider handicaps applied per WeGlide scoring rules
Two Scoring Categories
WeGlide Free
- Scored exclusively via WeGlide's Free scoring system
- Raw points = Free Distance (1.0 pt/km) + Area Bonus (best of FAI or O&R)
- FAI triangle: 0.3 pt/km | Out & Return: 0.2 pt/km
- Final score = Raw pts × 100 ÷ DMSt Index (min 50 pts)
Tasks
- Task must be declared on flight recorder or WeGlide before flying
- Ranked by average task speed (km/h)
- Best single task per pilot per scoring period counts
- WeGlide Premium required to host local competitions
Water Ballast
- Water ballast is permitted
- NISC override: ballasted flights are scored as if all takeoff water was carried for the entire flight, even if dumped en route
- Takeoff weight must be entered on WeGlide if any ballast is carried
- Note: the in-page Free Score Calculator computes a dry-weight score; ballasted flights may score differently on WeGlide
WeGlide Free Formula
Distance Raw Pts= Distance (km) × 1.0
FAI Bonus= FAI Distance × 0.3
O&R Bonus= O&R Distance × 0.2
Area Bonus= max(FAI Bonus, O&R Bonus)
Final Score= (Distance Pts + Area Bonus) × 100 ÷ DMSt Index
Minimum Score= 50 pts
FAI Triangle Requirements
- Shortest leg ≥ 28% of total FAI distance
- If distance ≥ 500 km: shortest leg ≥ 25%, longest leg ≤ 45%
- Flight path is "closed" if finish is within 1 km of start
- Start altitude may not exceed finish altitude by more than 1,000 m
Awards
- Season champion recognized at Chicagoland Glider Council meeting
- Top 3 monthly pilots recognized via mass email after each scoring month
- Additional recognition for best new/youth pilot, most improved, etc.
